Here's my favorite, geeky production anecdote: Fairly late in the production, we were gearing up to shoot the coffee shop scene. I wanted to have a girl for the coffee shop guy (Adam Mansbach) to flirt with in one quick cutaway, but Ethan and I had already exhausted all of our resources; every female friend we had between the two of us had already done us some sort of massive favor. So the day arrived, and we had no one, and Ethan was nonchalant about it, he said, Don't worry, someone will walk in off the street. Which seemed ridiculous to me. No one's gonna walk in off the street. So we're shooting, and this perfect girl walks in off the street, and Ethan says, Excuse me, miss, and explains our situation to her, and asks her if she's up for appearing in one shot of our little independent film. She says, Sure, okay, and then tells us that she is the niece of Albert Maysles, the great documentary filmmaker (who, with his brother David, made some of the truly, thrillingly great documentaries of all time: Salesman, Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens, etc.--also Al is a super nice guy who I chatted with once and who I think Ethan worked for once). This seems terribly fortuitous.
